Li Ma

2 Op Collective has their eyes on LI MA! Here are some examples of her work:

Q. Tell us about your work?

A. I grew up as a typical “Post-80s” Chinese who was born after the “One Child” policy. I did everything I was expected to do, pursued an Engineering degree and then worked in a multinational corporation. Moving to San Francisco from Shanghai inspired me to explore another possibility in life. Two years ago, I started the journey of being an artist. I believe the destiny is a realm of ultimate happiness and harmony. In order to visualize it and share it with you, I created a series of work including art on paper, sculpture and installation, called “Retrofuture City”. In this imaginative world landscape and cityscape blend into each other in an atmosphere of balance and harmony. The pictorial structure and cheerful colors create a sense of joy and optimism. Elements and symbols referencing Buddhism, Taoism, traditional Chinese paintings and Asian architecture are a product of my particular cultural experiences. I invite you to join my journey to this idealized place, to reflect on this optimism and aid in the discovery of what is possible and essential for the experience of the world.

Q. What advice do you have for your peers?

A. Learn from your peers. Support your peers. Help to pass on positive momentum within your peers. When your peers grow, you grow.

Q. Where can we learn more about you and your work?

A. I am now a MFA candidate in San Francisco Art Institute. My studio at SFAI’s graduate center is always open for visit by appointment. Please inquire by e-mail at marymaeno@gmail.com. To learn more about my work please visit malimalimali.com
